Java, Joe, Jitter Juice – whatever you call it, we are one coffee-crazy country. According to the American Coffee Association, the average American drinks 3 cups of coffee per day. You’re bound to encounter spill or two! A coffee stain is often difficult to remove. We’ll walk you through the steps to wipe out a coffee stain on clothing, carpeting, and furniture!
How to Remove a Coffee Stain From Anything!

How to Remove a Coffee Stain from Clothes
If you’re lucky enough to catch the spill when it’s fresh, place a paper towel on the inside and outside of the garment and press out as much moisture as possible. Cold water can be used to flush heavy coffee spills but avoid hot water that will set the stain. Wait until you are able to remove the garment before using a stain treatment.
For stains that you notice after your morning cup, soak the garment in cold water for at least 15 minutes.
In both cases you’ll want to wash the garment as soon as possible. Before washing pretreat the stain using a stain fighter that does not contain bleach such as Motsenbocker’s Lift Off Food, Drink, and Pet Stain Remover. Lift Off is specially formulated to attract the sugar and protein molecules in the coffee while eliminating the natural dyes. This non-bleaching formula completely removes the stain without damaging the fabric.
How to Remove a Coffee Stain from Carpet
Blot the coffee stain with an absorbent cotton cloth or paper towels if a cloth isn’t handy. Blot the area using pressure to pull the moisture out of the carpet fibers and avoid rubbing as it may damage carpet fibers resulting in a fuzzy texture.
Spray the coffee stain with Motsenbocker’s Lift Off Food, Drink, and Pet Stain Remover. Blot the area using an absorbent cotton cloth. Blot out as much of the moisture as possible. Carpet fibers work as a wick absorbing moisture and liquid spills deep within the nape and padding. After you’ve absorbed as much moisture as possible by hand apply a fresh cotton cloth and weight it down with something heavy like a book or two. Allow this to sit for at least an hour changing the cloth if it becomes saturated. Both the liquid from the stain and the stain remover will be absorbed leaving the nearly dry to the touch.
Use Lift Off to thoroughly spray the stain and allow it to sit for at least 60 seconds. Then wash the garment according to the care instructions.
Check the stain before tossing it into the dryer. If traces of the coffee stain remain, repeat the steps above. Heat from the clothes dryer can set the stain so be sure to check before you dry.
How to Remove a Coffee Stain from Furniture
There’s nothing like relaxing on a Saturday morning with a cup of coffee…until it splatters all over the sofa. What are you supposed to do now? A coffee stain can be particularly difficult on furniture and upholstery. If the material can be removed and washed follow the directions above for removing a coffee stain on clothing. If not, blot as much of the coffee out of the surface using an absorbent, clean white cloth (colored materials may transfer dye to the upholstery making the stain worse). Spray Motsenbocker’s Lift Off Pet, Food, and Drink Stain Remover on the coffee stain and allow it to sit for at least 60 seconds. Gently agitate with a toothbrush or other soft brush working in the same direction as the fabric grain. Pay careful attention to how the fabric is accepting the agitation – excessive scrubbing can result in fabric damage or pilling.
Blot the treated area to remove the coffee stain and stain remover. A hair dryer set to cool can be used to completely dry the area to avoid water marks.
